The San Diego Public Library system, which now utilizes a solution that includes TSP100ECO direct line thermal printers from Star Micronics, is no exception.

The San Diego Public Library serves the informational, educational, and recreational interests of San Diego, California residents at 33 branches throughout the city. Needing a way to serve an increasing number of patrons despite staffing shortages, the system sought the assistance of Library Automation Technology, Inc. (LAT) in Somerdale. N.J. LAT is a provider of library patron self-checkout systems for public, school, government, and hospital libraries. The company offers complete system design, manufacturing, and software development along with system installation and support.

Over a period of several months, LAT installed more than 30 of its FLASHSCAN® Self-Checkout systems, plus assorted peripherals, at various branches of the library. The solution is still being deployed in other branches as well as “renewed” at some locations where it has already been implemented, according to LAT President Oleg Boyarsky.

Instead of a traditional, “manned” checkout desk, patrons bring the materials they would like to borrow to the FLASHSCAN unit for self-checkout via a scanner or RFID reader. Using the TSP100ECO printer, they then generate their own slips indicating when the materials are due to be returned.

The TSP100ECO has several attributes that make it a perfect fit for the San Diego Public Library’s self-checkout configuration. A print speed of 28 receipts per minute and a partial cutter keep patrons moving quickly through the checkout process. Advanced power management circuitry reduces printer current consumption by up to 75% compared to standard Star printers, which not only makes the unit the most economic printer in its class; it reduces “book slip” printing expenditures as well.
As the world’s first environmentally friendly printer, the TSP100ECO also offers a number of features that minimize the environmental impact of printing—another “plus” for the sustainability-conscious library system. Notably, the unit uses 70% less paper than other printers.

But at Harney & Sons SoHo, a retail tea shop and café located in the popular SoHo district of New York City, a hardware and software configuration that includes four Star Micronics TSP143GT glossy high speed thermal receipt printers complements this store’s high end environment and helps to eliminate customer “bottlenecks” and, in many cases, personalize the shopping experience—resulting in increased sales.

Harney & Sons SoHo sells a wide variety of teas from around the world, as well as tea-related gifts and accessories. The shop also features a tea lounge where guests can sit and enjoy a cup of tea and nibble on scones or other small treats. The operator had previously deployed a point of sale system that ran on both Mac and PC platforms, but management concluded that it was neither sufficiently comprehensive nor easy enough to use, and could not truly support anticipated future growth. A decision was made to migrate to a more “modernized” technology configuration that would, among other features, incorporate a mobile component for enhanced flexibility and customer service.

Digital Reality, Inc., a Star Micronics reseller partner also headquartered in New York City stepped up to the plate with a solution comprised, in addition to the receipt printers, of LightSpeed POS and LightSpeed Mobile for Mac and iOS (including the LightSpeed mobile hardware sled for iPod touch); Apple iMac, Mac Pro, Airport Extreme, and Airport Express hardware; three Metrologic Ms9540 VoyagerCG bar code scanners; four IDTech MiniMag credit card readers; four Vasario Series USB cash drawers from APG Cash Drawer; two Zebra Technologies LP2824 Plus label printers; and three Logic Controls TD3000 tabletop displays.

This investment has paid off handsomely, says Eric Catania, Digital Reality’s president. The LightSpeed Mobile component, used with iPod Touch devices, increase profitability by allowing staff to process transactions anywhere in the store and to initiate receipt generation directly to the Star Micronics printers from the hand-held units. “Customers enjoy the convenience and personal attention of ‘skipping the line’ at the register and, if they would like, having an employee look through the inventory with them, help them to make a selection and close out the sale,” Catania notes.

“Staff can also take the mobile solution anywhere in the world with a WiFi connection, present products to customers, and sell from the inventory they have with them.”

Certain features of the hardware and software alike enhance these benefits, Catania adds. Specifically, the TSP143GT boasts a print speed of up to 4.9 inches per second, eliminating virtually any wait for receipts once transactions have been closed out. The LightSpeed system is very intuitive, which also speeds up sales.

Other features simplified the installation and training processes, which took 12 and eight hours, respectively. For example, the TSP143GT—the point of sale industry’s first all-in-one receipt printer—comes with all standard operating system drivers—among them the Mac drivers needed for the Harney & Sons SoHo implementation as well as Windows and Linux. All parts and software—including an internal power supply, interface cable, power cable, complete mounting kits and a paper roll—are provided in one box.

“Since LightSpeed is easier to train on and use than competing solutions, Harney & Sons staff quickly adopted it and enjoy using it,” Catania concludes. “The entire solution offers quick, error-free transactions at the LightSpeed POS screen, combined with hand-held sales anywhere in the world with a WiFi connection. They’re capturing more customer sales in a shorter time—in more places.”

The family-owned “Mom and Pop” store offers 2,500 pairs of sunglasses in a wide range of brands, styles and prices, as well as sunglass-related items.

“Our goals are to educate our customers to the point where they can select the best pair of sunglasses for their needs that also represents the best value for their money,” says Dee Keel, owner. “An informed, educated customer is a satisfied customer that will return and also tell their friends about the intense, personal service they experienced while shopping with us.”

According to Keel, satisfying customers not only means relying on training to ensure that all sunglass frames are professionally fitted to suit individual shoppers’ needs, as it happens at the shop, but it also means providing shoppers with assurance that they are purchasing the items from a reputable establishment. This wasn’t something Keel and her staff had the ability to do—until the retailer installed Star Micronics’ TSP700 thermal printer.

With the printer in place, store personnel can quickly and easily generate receipts that show where, when and at what price shoppers bought their sunglasses and/or accessories. Customers who need subsequent assistance with their purchases or have general questions need only refer to their receipt and bring it to the store for assistance; there is, states Keel, no chance that they are dealing with a merchant that isn’t on the up-and-up. Two-color receipt generation occurs at a high speed of 7.09 inches per second, while such features as “Drop in & Print” paper loading and an easy-to-change, cartridge-type interface minimizes printing delays. A logo storage utility allows logos to be added to receipts without difficulty.

Not long ago, The Sunglass Shop upgraded its point of sale system and needed to install printer drivers in its TSP700 printer so that the two devices would interface with each other. Keel tried to do the job alone, but was unsuccessful. A quick telephone call to Star Micronics’ technical support department solved the problem. Tech support personnel walked Keel through the process, and everything was up and running within minutes.

“Again, we can print receipts on demand with no trouble,” Keel concludes. “That leads to better customer service”—just what The Sunglass Shop on Ocracoke is all about.

When you consider roadways, parking meters and safety code enforcement, it adds up to a lot of ground to cover for the state’s 550 municipal police departments.

Now issuing violations is easier and more efficient with the new technology police officers have at their fingertips: Info-Cop® eTicketing makes law enforcement officers more efficient by reducing the time it takes to produce a summons. Gone are the days of collecting a driver’s personal information, calling it to a dispatcher on a two-way radio…..waiting for a response….and then writing a citation. And if an officer needs to write more than one ticket, without Info-Cop® eTicketing it’s certainly going to be a long wait.

Now, an officer swipes the license through a laptop scanner, Smart Phone or Pocket PC and accesses a wireless computer network that links the officer directly to a motor vehicle database with warrant information and available photo images. If multiple violations are observed, the officer can continue to select additional violations and print tickets without re-entering driver or vehicle information. As each ticket is issued, a ticket number is automatically generated and received by the court system. Upon issuance, the violations are transmitted for processing at the courts.

“Info-Cop® eTicketing is proven to make officers more efficient,” said Virginia Bauer, CEO of GTBM Inc. “It reduces the amount of time officers must spend in issuing a summons, allowing for more time to patrol and engage in other law enforcement services for the community.”

Fines are quickly collected as the ability to argue manual error on written tickets is diminished and legibility concerns that forced ticket dismissals in court are virtually eliminated. The software’s automatic transmission of information to the courts cuts out the need for data entry.

In order to outfit an officer with Info-Cop®, a police cruiser requires a new or existing mobile computer with wireless access. Info-Cop® eTicketing software is installed on the mobile computer and a Star Micronics TSP847 thermal printer is mounted, connected to power and configured to interface with the computer and software.

“The software is easy to install and start using,” said Virginia. “It only takes an hour to complete an entire vehicle installation of hardware, software and configuration, which includes running necessary power lines for the printer. It takes another 30 minutes to teach officers how to use it and they can begin using it that day!”

Their mission: to target new customers and cultivate repeat business from existing patrons, while reducing advertising expenditures. Hu’s Asian Bistro recently fulfilled this mission by installing highly flexible, highly reliable Star Micronics printers and other top-tier point of sale components in its two units in Winnipeg, Manitoba. To date, the investment has yielded a 2% boost in sales and has significantly expanded the operator’s customer base; advertising costs are down by approximately $1,000 per month.

The TSP143 printers also offer a wealth of additional features that pave the way for efficient operation, including a high-speed throughput of 25 receipts per minute, “Plug & Play” USB drivers, and “Drop-In & Print” paper loading, plus all standard operating system drivers (Windows™, Linux™ and Mac™) and specialty drivers (e.g., OPOS™ and JPOS).

Meanwhile, the loyalTXT application lets Hu’s Asian Bistro interact with a wider breadth of customers via text, Facebook, and Twitter. The PAR Technologies point of sale software seamlessly handles all point of sale functions as well as labor scheduling; the integrated Mercury Payment Systems solutions do the same on the credit and gift card processing fronts.
“This is an ideal combination of technology for Hu’s Asian Bistro,” said Gord Doerksen, at Ideal POS. “It allows the owners to market their restaurant to a whole new demographic while spending much less on advertising. They can advertise directly to the customers that already know them, like them, and trust them. There are no drawbacks; only advantages.”

Hu’s Asian Bistro did not act alone to achieve its objectives; rather, it turned to Winnipeg-based Ideal POS, LTD, for assistance. The operator had previously worked with another VAR, but wanted to find a reseller on which it could count to provide a more consistent level of service, including the desired point of sale/marketing integration piece. Ideal POS had the experience needed to get the job done, along with the right technology: Star Micronics’ TSP143 thermal receipt printers, plus a hardware/software bundle comprised of PAR point of sale hardware and PixelPoint POS point of sale software from PAR Technologies. Rounding out the list of solution components were loyalTXT for PAR PixelPoint, a PAR-certified integration of the loyalTXT text-based customer loyalty application from Sundrop Mobile; and gift and credit card processing solutions from Mercury Payment Systems.

Four PAR point of sale terminals and four Star Micronics printers were installed at each store. Implementation and training took one week per location. The operator then devoted three months to tweaking the system after it went live.
Hu’s Asian Bistro uses the Star Micronics TSP143 printers not only to generate receipts, but to print coupons for special offers and promotions using embedded futurePRNT receipt redesign tools. The tools enable the restaurateur to design these marketing vehicles for maximum appeal by embellishing them with eye-catching images and text. An “Image Import” tool eliminates the need for traditional image preparation work; an unlimited number of image files can be accessed by the control panel, saved by name and prepared for output with a choice of dither methods and no need for “pre-sizing” or “pre-saving”. A “Pre-View” tool allows images to be reviewed during set-up. Other tools facilitate receipt cropping, text replacement, and more.

Printer Cures Pediatrician’s Prescribing Ills

In the not-too-distant past, writing prescriptions was not a particularly complicated process for most, if not all, physicians. They simply decided on an appropriate drug and either telephoned orders directly to the pharmacy or recorded dispensing instructions on standard prescription pads. However, the tides have turned. For example, prescriptions for controlled substances must be written on tamper-proof paper. Additionally, regulations issued by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) stipulate that in order to combat fraud, all prescriptions intended for patients covered by Medicaid must be issued on tamper-proof paper if the physician does not fax or email them directly to the pharmacy.

Bert Adams, M.D., of Riverview Pediatrics in Brewer, Maine, recently sought a remedy for prescription-writing ills caused by these mandates. He wanted a way to increase efficiencies and save time by “printing to tamper-proof paper in a legible fashion”, and by generating prescriptions for controlled substances noted in patients’ electronic medical records (EMR) in the same manner as he did prescriptions for non-controlled substances.

“Hand-writing ‘scripts’ on tamper-proof prescription pads was time-consuming, and there was a margin for error,” Dr. Adams says. “It also caused huge security issues, since I had a habit of leaving prescription pads in the exam rooms.”

The cure came in the form of Star Micronics’ TSP800Rx printer, which uses prescription-writing software to generate prescriptions from EMRs. In addition to being designed specifically for the medical industry, the unit meets Riverview Pediatrics’ need for prescription printing efficiency with an ultra-rapid print speed of 50 lines per second, a “Drop In & Print” paper loading feature, a “disable paper feed” function and a jam-proof cutter—all essential for busy medical offices. In addition to accommodating the necessary tamper-proof paper, the TSP800Rx provides another layer of security via a locking mechanism that deters unauthorized removal of prescription media from the paper chamber.

Having the printer in place yields Riverview several significant benefits. Printing prescriptions rather than writing them out by hand saves time not only because the process is faster, but because the software automatically picks up and includes on the paper certain phrases from patients’ EMRs—for instance, dosing information and diagnoses for conditions being treated with “scripts” generated on a monthly basis.

The legibility of printed “scripts” generated by the unit also plays a role here; staff need no longer field many telephone calls from pharmacies and patients who are unable to read Dr. Adams’ handwriting.

“They love it,” Dr. Adams states. “They can even print out recurring ‘scripts’ the day before for my signature, as most will be the same” each month.

He adds that the printer also affords flexibility in issuing to Medicaid patients paper prescriptions for non-controlled substances. “While I can still ePrescribe or fax these prescriptions to pharmacies, there are times we need to make hard copy ‘scripts’,” he explains. “Say the patient doesn’t know what pharmacy he or she will use, isn’t supposed to fill the ‘script’ unless a certain criteria, like the developing a fever, occurs, or there is a need to take the ‘script’ out of state. With the Star Micronics printer, I can quickly print a legible ‘script’“─on the required tamper-proof paper.

Riverview Pediatrics saves approximately $750 annually through a combination of decreased employee time in handling prescriptions and reduced prescription pad waste (including entire pads). And although Dr. Adams experienced a few challenges in configuring the software, these were readily addressed by a Star Micronics representative who emailed him “daily” to achieve a rapid resolution.

“For us, the TSP800Rx has been a great investment,” Dr. Adams concludes.

Enter Real Green Systems. The Walled Lake, Michigan-based ISV and VAR stepped in with a product bundle comprised of Star Micronics’ TSP847 thermal printers, “netbook” computers, its own Mobile Assistant application and tracking software, and CoPilot navigation software. Project cost totaled $3 million, including the installation of over 1,200 Star Micronics printers.

With the solution in place, automated methods have replaced manual ones. Entirely legible, professional-looking customer estimates, invoices and receipts created on the “netbook” computers are quickly generated by the printers at a speed of 180mm per second. The units utilize 4.4-inch-wide paper, allowing more information to be included on documents shared with customers, while a logo storage capability adds a professional look to each receipt and further minimizes receipt printing time. Other features, such as a heavy-duty cutter and a swappable interface makes changing the interface a snap.

In addition to producing customer documentation, crews utilize the “netbook” computers to accurately collect information about clients’ needs and product usage at individual job sites, bolstering the potential for future sales. Material-tracking data is also maintained on the units, and navigation/routing information is accessed via the software. LawnService Techs must print out a product inventory and route summary report at the end of each day. The Star Micronics’ TSP847 is able to quickly print the reports speeding up their daily check out process.

Besides the convenience and professionalism of printer-generated receipts, the solution offers a myriad of other benefits, according to Joe McPhail, Real Green Systems’ vice president of operations. These include increased efficiency and time savings in the field and the office, reaped by collecting information via computer rather than by hand, as well as greatly enhanced accuracy of chemical application data collection and subsequent reduced liability. Access to routing and navigation data has resulted in shorter vehicle drive times and reduced vehicle operations costs.

More than 80 branch locations will have the technology in place by April 1, 2011.

The good news: technology—including printers from Star Micronics--can play a pivotal role in overcoming these obstacles and attaining key goals.

That’s what one independent supermarket chain based in the Northeastern U.S. discovered when it deployed 29 kiosks comprised of Star Micronics’ TSP847U thermal printers, 37-inch TekPanel kiosk heads, and Custom Laser, Inc. Powder Coated Steel Kiosk Stands in all 16 of its stores and at corporate headquarters. The kiosks run the ShoptoCook software application from VAR/ISV ShoptoCook, Inc., which supplied and implemented the bundled solution. ShoptoCook specializes in the delivery and managing of interactive customer centric media through multiple current and emerging technology platforms in the grocery industry.

The grocer turned to ShoptoCook in an attempt to find a means of bringing shoppers into its stores instead of leaving the door open to competitors. Other objectives entailed driving shoppers back to the center store to purchase items they had not initially planned to pick up during a given visit, supplying customers with consistent product information across the organization, inspiring consumers to try new (and possibly costlier) cuts of meat and seafood; and providing shoppers with the necessary tools for enjoying the optimal shopping experience—all on a 24/7 basis, explains Alan Goodyear, project manager, ShoptoCook.

The retailer received the hardware components, which were shipped to a centralized location within the chain, four weeks after placing the order. Two employees then spent two days staging all 29 kiosks, a simple process that involved unpacking, loading a software “ghost” image onto each unit, assembling the kiosk stands, and testing. In-store installation occurred over a subsequent two-week period, with minimal training of about 20 minutes per store needed to show associates the application and demonstrate how to load the printer paper.

Customers in all stores now rely heavily on the kiosks to access and print out a wide variety of information. A Meal Planning application provides more than 5,000 recipes associated with products carried in the fresh foods department, while an Interactive Weekly Circular application enables shoppers to build shopping lists and obtain suggested recipes that incorporate items promoted in weekly circular advertisements. Similarly, Produce and Cheese applications enrich shopper and associate expertise by providing answers quickly and easily. For example, with the former, shoppers can quickly locate recipes for every fruit and vegetable variety in the store, along with selection, preparation, handling, storage tips and nutritional facts. The latter provides a description of individual cheeses, as well as detailed information about their heritage, appearance, and “performance”. Suggestions for serving each type of cheese, along with a list of other items that might “go well” with it, are also provided. A Health & Wellness application yields shoppers meal ideas and summary information about popular health concerns.

With this wealth of information at their fingertips, Goodyear says, shoppers are indeed expressing heightened interest in experimenting with different types of meats and seafood and are gravitating back to the center store to pick up additional ingredients not on their list of intended purchases. The availability of additional meal planning information and other advice round-the-clock is bolstering customer loyalty.

“Internal and third-party research confirms that providing recipes to shoppers in the aisle sells more product,” Goodyear asserts. “Sales lift ranges from 5% to 22%, with full category lift as high as 14%. Recipes sell. But more importantly, the solution solves a fundamental problem many shoppers face daily; what to prepare for dinner tonight! Using technology from one vendor to solve shoppers’ problems, while increasing sales, is a win-win for everyone.”

Many Star Micronics printers may be easily integrated with POSLavu, which allows retail and hospitality end-users to enjoy the convenience of wireless connections not only to receipt and kitchen printers, but to cash drawers as well. No special printer configuration is necessary; end-users need only find and supply the IP address of the printers they wish to operate in tandem with the software.

POSLavu then takes full advantage of the powerful technology built into the Apple iPad™, iPod Touch®, and iPhone®, connecting to the Internet via high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi. Point of sale and kitchen printing—along with other functions—can be initiated directly from any of these hand-held devices, over Wi-Fi or through “cloud” computing. This eliminates the need to walk back and forth between point of sale terminals and printers and creates entirely mobile, versatile point of sale solutions.

What’s more, wireless point of sale applications built on POSLavu may be implemented at approximately one-fourth the price of their traditional wired counterparts—a tremendous cost savings for hospitality and retail store operators no matter what the scope of their particular implementation. To date, the largest site to install POSLavu utilizes the solution on eight point of sale terminals and twenty iPod Touches, along with seven Star Micronics printers, including the TSP654. An unlimited software license covers the entire POS application.

Distributed internationally by APPLE, POSLavu is easily installed in less than one hour, and training may be completed within minutes. “Today’s retailers and restaurateurs need easy-to-use point of sale hardware, peripherals and software that conserves costs and makes day-to-day operation far easier,” said Christophe Naasz, Director of Marketing at Star Micronics. “Combining our printers with POSLavu is a great way to give it to them.”

While some orders for medication and devices may be conveyed to pharmacies by telephone, federal regulations stipulate that controlled substance prescriptions be presented at pharmacies before they are dispensed. Stringent regulations issued recently by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) to combat the estimated $5 billion in annual prescription fraud committed throughout the U.S. also come into play; these regulations call for secure prescriptions that cannot be copied, altered or counterfeited.

Bob Norman, director of IT at Mankato Clinic, had such challenges in mind as he shopped the aisles of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference & Exhibition three years ago. One of Minnesota’s largest physician-owned, multi-specialty regional group practices, Mankato Clinic operates eight sites in and around Mankato; its staff includes 80 physicians.

At the time of Norman’s visit to the HIMSS meeting, Mankato Clinic management had already decided to migrate from a manual (handwritten) prescription-issuance system to a printer-based one. “We thought it would be better all around in terms of compliance with all regulations, as well as to make the job a little easier for the doctors,” Norman said. Management had also concluded that using dedicated prescription printers, rather than all-purpose laser jet printers fitted with prescription-generating software, would be their best bet because the latter are more expensive and print prescriptions on 8 ½” X 11” paper instead of standard prescription form.

“We didn’t want to pay more for ‘all-purpose’ printers when all we were going to do was to generate prescriptions,” Norman explained. “We also needed very solid, secure dedicated units with a convenient small footprint, and that would even hang on a wall if we wanted them to.”

In perusing the HIMMS exhibits, Norman found exactly what he sought in Star Micronics America’s TSP800Rx thermal printer. “It fit all our criteria,” he noted. In addition to being designed specifically for the medical industry, it offers durability, a small footprint, and a wall-mounting option.” Even more importantly, Norman said, the TSP800Rx is the only printer available for the medical industry to boast a locking mechanism that deters unauthorized removal of prescription media from the paper chamber.

Other attributes of the unit also caught Norman’s eye. These included a Kensington lock slot for added security, plus an ultra-rapid print speed of 50 lines per second, a “ Drop In & Print” paper loading feature, a “disable paper feed” function and a jam-proof cutter--all essential for busy medical offices.

Mankato Clinic currently has 25 TSP800Rx printers in place, all of which operate with Allscripts prescribing software from Allscripts-Misys Heathcare Solutions. The first unit was deployed at one site two years ago. It received such rave reviews that an additional 24 units were rolled out two to three months later, in a span of four to five months. Norman handled the installation himself, a process he described as “very simple, with no problems.”

Aside from the desired ability to generate prescriptions with far more efficiency than in the past while occupying minimal space, the printers deliver on the promise of security. Not long ago, one of Mankato Clinic’s physicians attempted to access a printer at his site without using a key. “He had sent his print job to a different machine, but didn’t realize it and tried to get into this unit because he thought he had the right one and that the paper was just stuck,” Norman said. “He tried a lot of different things to get to the paper mechanism, without success. This goes to show just how secure the TSP800Rx really is.”

What’s more, he added, Mankato Clinic is reaping other benefits from the installation. Notably, all of the facilities are saving paper because there is no need to utilize regular size, 8 ½” X 11” stock. Pharmacies like the solution; there is no longer any worry about deciphering prescriptions that bear the illegible or difficult-to-read handwriting for which physicians are renowned.”

“The TSP800Rx is secure, efficient and not terribly expensive,” Norman concludes. “What more could we want in a dedicated printing solution?”
